If you met someone online, you will never truly know who they are until you meet them in person.  Emailing, chatting, IMing, and texting don't prove that the person you are starting a relationship with online is actually who they say they are.  Even video chatting could be a video of someone else or prerecorded footage.  Relationships are best started in person.
